Press Release
President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili at a conference of the Center for Advanced Energy Studies at the University of Haifa: "Georgia's Status as an Oil Transit State Can Help Stabilize the International System"
Karim Massimov, Kazakhstan's Deputy Prime Minister, at the conference: "We will sell oil to Israel and receive from it technological knowledge for hi-tech development"
HAIFA. November 1, 2006 - "There are oil-rich states whose interest is in undermining the international system in order to raise oil prices, so they intentionally create international crises."
The president of the republic of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili made this charge yesterday at a ceremony launching the Center for Advanced Energy Studies at the University of Haifa.
"This is the reason that the Caucuses are so vital for insuring and stabilizing the world energy economy," Saakashvili added. The University conferred an honorary doctorate on the Georgian president in the course of the ceremony.
In his opinion, Georgia is a resource-poor country that has succeeded in becoming important to the world energy market because of its location. "Many energy lines pass through us, and so a stable Georgia is important for the stabilization of the world energy market," he stated.
The Deputy Prime Minister of another former member of the Soviet Union, the energy-rich Kazakhstan, told the conference audience that his country had already held a number of talks with Israel on connecting it to the BTC oil pipeline, which runs from the Caucuses to Turkey. Israel would then be able to import oil from Kazakhstan. "We have shown our readiness for the project in a number of discussions that we held with Israeli government representatives," he said.
Massimov cited his country's dual role of an oil supplier, on the one hand, and a friend of Israel, on the other. According to Kazakhstan government assessments and declarations, the state can increase its oil production capability to 3.5 million barrels a year up to the year 2015.
"As an oil supplier that has relations with many countries," he continued, "we must take a much more active role in the war on terrorism."
