Summary Of Attack On IDF Missile Ship [Defense System Doesn't Use IFF?]
2006-07-15
[IMRA: The explanation provided by the IDF on Israel Television for the failure of the anti-missile system to protect the ship was that it was not operating in a fully automatic mode in order to avoid hitting Israeli aircraft operating in the area. It remains unclear from the explanation if this means that the anti-missile system does have the ability to query aircraft for their IFF codes and for some unknown reason this option was not implemented or if the defense system has a practical operational limitation for use in protecting vessels that are participating in an operation that includes airborne forces.]

The Israeli ship is now making its way back to Israel.
During the incident, Israeli navy ships identified an explosion on an Egyptian commercial ship while was sailing in international territorial waters.
It is assured that the ship was struck by a similar missile that hit the Israeli boat. The Egyptian ship drowned and its crew was rescued by another nearby commercial ship.
The Israeli Navy will continue to enforce the naval blockade on Lebanese ports and has also attacked earlier this morning a number of Hezbollah targets around Beirut.
