GAZA (Reuters) - A Palestinian rocket aimed at a Jewish settlement in the Gaza Strip fell short on Thursday, killing a Palestinian boy when it hit his home at the edge of a crowded refugee camp, an Interior Ministry spokesman said.
Medics said a 13-year-old boy was killed and his 7-year-old brother critically wounded by the rocket fire in the Khan Younis refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, where Israel plans to evacuate all of its settlements starting in mid-August.
The death could further inflame tensions between militant groups fighting Israel and Palestinian security forces who last week intervened to try to stop rocket fire at Israel, prompting clashes with the Hamas militant group.
But it was not immediately clear who fired Thursday's rocket, and there was no claim of responsibility.
"The Ministry of Interior has issued several warnings to all Palestinian factions that these rockets represent a serious danger to people's souls and property," Interior Ministry spokesman Tawfiq Abu Khoussa said.
The recent clashes with Hamas, which has posed a growing military and political challenge to President Mahmoud Abbas, marked the worst Palestinian internal violence in years.
Security forces had intervened on Abbas's orders after a rocket killed an Israeli woman last week in an attack gunmen said was in response to Israeli killings of militants. Rocket fire has diminished since then to sporadic attacks.
Israel says it will not allow Palestinian gunmen to disrupt Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's plan to quit all 21 Gaza Jewish settlements and four of 120 in the West Bank. The pullout will mark the first time Israel has removed settlements from occupied land Palestinians want for a state.
