Israel Police Statements On Spikes Found In Bag, Fear Of "Life Endangering" Crowding At Kfar Maimon
2005-07-20
[IMRA:There is concern that Israel Police Commissioner Moshe Karadi's remark that "crowding by marchers close to the Kfar Maimon fence is liable to endanger the lives of their people, who are liable to be crushed against the fence and thus injured" is an attempt to create an excuse for harsh police actions to "save" the marchers from a "life endangering situation" - since the police can use extreme force in a "life endangering situation". Israel Television Channel One Mabat reported from the scene - after reporting Karadi's remark - that the Yesha Council has put many "protest marshals" in the area and that the situation is in very much under control.]
Israel Police Statements
Communicated by the Israel Police
The Israel Police has released the following statement:
"At approximately 18:30, police personnel from the Lachish sub-district apprehended a 24-year-old resident of Beit El after he tried to slash the tires of a police vehicle. Many spikes were found in his bag. He admitted that he had been sent to damage police property.
Israel Police Commissioner Moshe Karadi has held talks with Yesha Council leaders and emphasized to them that crowding by marchers close to the Kfar Maimon fence is liable to endanger the lives of their people, who are liable to be crushed against the fence and thus injured. The Police Commissioner calls on the aforesaid leaders to avoid uncontrolled meetings between soldiers and police, and demonstrators that are liable to put lives at risk.
Rabbis and leaders at Kfar Maimon have asked Southern District Police Commander Uri Bar-Lev to contact Police Commissioner Karadi and IDF Chief-of-Staff Lt.-Gen. Dan Halutz and ask them to come to Kfar Maimon so that the aforesaid rabbis and leaders may request that they be allowed to march towards Gush Katif. Commander Bar-Lev is presently speaking with local commanders while the rabbis are addressing a rally."
