Amman, Dec. 8 (Petra-Jordan News Agency)-- Jordan and the US signed on Wednesday a customs mutual assistance agreement with a view to assist the two countries in improving the flow of trade and securing it against terrorism.

The agreement was signed by Director of Jordan Customs Department Mahmoud Qteishat and Commissioner of the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Robert C. Bonner.

The US Embassy in Amman issued a statement in which it noted that the agreement would also allow the CBP and Jordan Customs Department to exchange information, intelligence, and other assistance.

"The international trade is increasing rapidly and terrorism is a global threat. It is now critical that customs agencies around the world share information, not only to improve the flow of trade, but also to secure trade routes," said Bonner, who also added that every one wins when we establish consistent standards to promote international trade, thwart criminal activity, and defeat terrorism.

The Commissioner noted that the signing of this mutual agreement recognizes an excellent existing working relationship and further acknowledges Jordan as a strong, strategic partner.

On his part Qteishat pointed to the importance of this agreement in the field of overcoming challenges that face customs.

It is noted that the US Customs and Border Protection has signed agreements with a number of other customs administrations worldwide. As of today, 53 agreements have been signed.
