A new publication by the Central Bureau of Statistics that appeared this week - "Olim from the FSU - stated that 850,000 people made aliyah from the FSU during the 1990's. Haifa absorbed more olim than any other city - 58,000, followed by Ashdod - 55,000, and Beersheva - 47,000. Olim from the FSU now account for 13% of Israel's population. A third came from Russia and a third from the Ukraine. Almost 60% have higher education, compared with 40% of the general Jewish population in Israel. Of the olim who arrived in 1999, 58% were academics, technical and other professionals - almost double the percentage among the general Jewish population in Israel. The standard of living of olim from the FSU increases the longer they live in Israel and they eventually move from rented to owned apartments.
